The structure of the small Kingdoms in the South of France was fundamentally different then the rest of France. There was an atmosphere of openness, independence, freedom of mind and spirit without any prejudice towards, race, religion or nationality. The County of Toulouse was an independent Kingdom although had to pay both the King of France and the King of Aragon. The relation with Paris was similar to that of the relationship Flanders had with Paris. Cultural and language the Occidental area were more inclined towards the Kingdoms of Aragon, Castilian and Leon.

There are many Templar sites to visit in the South of France.
Troubadours, artists and chronicle writers were very much welcomed in Castles and were under the protection of the nobles. Nobles were engaged in writing and music and Jews, Moslims and Catholics could apply for and were granted without discrimination important positions.
The difference in society and culture with the North of France was huge. In Occitania it was possible to advance in life through hard work, virtue, braveness or other personal qualities. Women were allowed to speak and would be listened to. It’s not a surprise that in a climate like this production and trade flourished.
