A collection of Merovingian coins of gold, silver and bronze issued between the 5th century and the beginning of the reign of Pepin the Short (751). It was constituted from the 19th century from large collections bequeathed or acquired (Ponton d’Amécourt, Belfort, etc.) and archaeological discoveries, in particular some great treasures essential to our knowledge of the coinage of this period of the history of France (treasure of Bais, Nice-Cimiez…). A catalog of the collection was established at the end of the 19th century by Maurice Prou, which is still a reference to this day.
