Le Chateau Salses

The fort occupies a strategic position, connecting France and Spain between the Corbières mountains and Lake Leucate. Built between 1497 and 1504, the fort has an imposing architecture. The fortress of Salses is a typical example of the transition between the medieval castle,  from which it adopted the keep and corner towers of the long courtines and the modern geometric fortress.
The walls are 6 to 10 m thick and buried to half height in a large moat that can be flooded. The elevation of the structure includes three to seven layers connected by a complex internal connecting system. The fortress is preceded by advanced defensive posts in the form of three towers connected to the central part by caponnieres. The fortress has the shape of a large rectangle.
